A Breif History of The Eiffel Tower



History
Here is a brief history about the Eiffel Tower and Paris.The Eiffel Tower was built for a International Exhibition of Paris in 1889 honoring the centenary of the French Revolution. The Prince of Wales who was later named King Edward VII of England, was the one to opened the tower.Out of 700 proposals that were submitted in a design competition, Gustave Eiffel's was collectively chosen. All though it was not accepted by everyone at first, there was a petition with 300 names which protested its construction.

The tower is about 300 meters, 320.75 m including the antenna, and weighs 7,000 tons, and till 1930 it was the world's tallest building. The tower consists of 2.5 million rivets,1500 iron pieces,40 tons of paint and took 2 years and 300 steel workers to construct it.The construction started in 1887 and was finished in 1889. It takes 1652 steps to get to the top of the tower.
